Selecting a fire extinguisher
Extinguisher are classified according to the type of fire for which they are suitable.
- Claas A:Type of fire-->Common combustibles,Examples->Wood,paper,cloth etc.
- Class B:Type of fire-->Flammable Liquid and gases,Examples->Gasoline,propana and solvents.
- Class C:Type of fire-->Live electical equipments,Examples->Television,Refrigerator,computer etc.
- Class D:Type of fire-->Combusiable metals,Examples->Magnesium,Lithium,Titanium.
- Class K:Type of fire-->Cooking media,Examples->Cooking oils and Fats.
How to use fire extinguishers
Remember: PASS
Pull the pin
Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire.
Squeeze the trigger while holding the extinguisher upright.
Sweep the fire from side to side.
Note:Pull a fire alarm box and alert others before you attempt to use a fire extinguisher.
When not to fight fire?
- If the fire is spreading beyond the spot where it started.
- If you cannot fight the fire with your back to an escape exit.
- If the fire can block your only escape.
- If you do not have adequate fire fighting equipment.
