Our ‘buddy model’ is set up on the premise that every experience and every being is a teacher. A buddy here is someone who doesn’t tell you what to learn, but someone who along with you discovers and helps you discover what learning is about. Journeying years together with a buddy also creates an ecosystem leading to a community that provides life-long care to children and adults with special needs. Given their medical needs and impairments, the dependence that these children/adults have on their parents/caregivers is very high. The genuine concerns from caregivers, in most cases parent/s is related to the survival and coping mechanisms of a child in the absence of them. Using arts based therapy in creating internal peer buddy systems across age groups and across cross-disabled populations, leads to different approaches to learning and the spaces these children will share in future. We hope to build a model that addresses life goals and academic interventions, where possible learning experiences meet vocational goals, livelihood and long term care giving.
